Roles and Prospects in Tourism

The ‘Act East Policy’ is an initiative to promote economic, strategic and cultural relations with the vast Asia-Pacific region at differentlevels.

It aims to promote economic cooperation, cultural ties and developing a strategic relationship with countries in the Indo-Pacific with a proactive and pragmatic approach, thereby improving the economic development of the North Eastern Region (NER) which is a gateway to the South East Asia Region.

Assam Tourism can play a direct and active role in not only furthering the relations of the people of the region but also in rejuvenating the lost link that once used to strongly thrive between the people of NE India and the Asia-Pacific region. There is an uncanny resemblance in the traditions, customs, language, cuisine and even in the dress code. This can certainly augment tourist influx and allied with scenic beauty will act as a catalyst in promoting the region. In addition to natural beauty, religious tourism can greatly attract various religious sects as the region has attractions for all major world religions.

Assam is blessed with an array of natural resources which can be optimally utilized to encourage Business Tourism. Assam also presents opportunities for adventure tourism, tea tourism, and river tourism, Medical tourism also has a very high potential as was evident during the Covid-19 pandemic. Assam is not only a gateway for the countries on the South China Sea but can also provide advanced medical services to counter the scarcity of the same in many of the economically flailing countries of the region.

India, as the leading beacon in the region, can guide the whole of South East Asia into an age of co-ordination and co-operation and coalesce into a coherent and cohesive coexistence and Assam Tourism can be a strategic partner in streamlining this course of action.
